Zajedno s prugom Vrpolje – Sarajevo, ova pruga je činila 24% tadašnje željezničke mreže u BiH (ukupna dužina obje pruge iznosila je 450,5 km), te 60% rada i 65% prihoda ŽTP-a Sarajevo, i u to vrijeme bila je najsuvremenija pruga tadašnje države.
